ONE DEGREE OF CHANGE HONOREE
Sindy Hernandez, Alumna 2015
Santa Rosa Junior College; Humboldt State University
10,000 Degrees is honored to celebrate Sindy Hernandez as the 2019 One Degree of Change Award recipient. Having come through the Marin County foster care system, Sindy is positive proof that personal encouragement, college and financial aid advising, along with access to the tools needed to succeed can help students like her realize their college and career dreams. In fact, five of Sindy’s foster siblings benefited from 10,000 Degrees support and have since graduated from college, while a sixth sibling is currently enrolled in 10,000 Degrees program support and is working hard to follow in the family footsteps.
A Marin County resident and San Rafael High School graduate, Sindy is now a Senior Support Services Worker for Child and Family Services within the County of Marin Department of Health and Human Services in support of bilingual children and families.
Ismail “Ish” Azam , 10,000 Degrees Scholar
College of Marin; UC Berkeley, Class of 2020
A little more than five years ago, with a 0.8 GPA and an ACT score of 19, due in large part to difficulties his family was enduring, Ish
dropped out of San Rafael High School. With limited other options, he applied for and was accepted to participate in 10,000 Degrees college campus immersion experience: the Summer Intensive—his life would never be the same.
Within three years of being introduced to 10,000 Degrees support, including near-peer advising and unwavering encouragement, at the age of 15, Ish enrolled at the College of Marin—he soon became COM’s youngest student government President. Just two years later, he transferred to UC Berkeley where he currently studies engineering, business, and entrepreneurship. Now just 20 years old, Ish teaches a course on business networking and will soon lead a new class: “Living Your Best Life.” Ish is also the President of Product Space, a student-centered program studying product design, management, and marketing.
In addition to managing his coursework, Ish works at Microsoft as an Innovation Consultant. He is the CEO of a new startup company that helps students land their dream careers through innovative business networking practices. Later this year, Ish plans to publish his first book, comprised of 300 interviews with successful recruiters, entrepreneurs, and CEOs, titled The Blueprint to the Most Important Skill Your Degree Didn’t Teach You: Business Networking.
